The Friend Who Finally Takes the 6 Train With Me

Two years in New York and I think I made a real one

Dispatch from Astoria, Queens

Making friends in New York as a grown woman is the hardest thing nobody warns you about.

You can find a job, an apartment, a good dentist. But a friend? A real one, the kind who knows which train you take home and texts to check you made it? That takes years and most people give up.

I almost had. For a long time my social life was coworkers I liked at a professional distance and one group chat I muted. I'd moved from a city where I'd known the same people since I was seven. In Ahmedabad friendship was ambient, inherited, always there. Here you have to build it from nothing, brick by brick, like some exhausting IKEA of the heart.

So this week felt enormous. I met a girl named Reva at a styling event in the Flatiron, and we got talking about everything — our mothers, our rents, the specific loneliness of being Indian and single and twenty-four in a city that doesn't slow down. We closed down the venue. The staff were stacking chairs around us.

And then — this is the part — she rode the 6 train all the way up to Astoria with me, past her own stop, because we weren't done talking. Do you understand what that is? A grown adult in New York choosing to spend forty extra minutes underground just to keep being near you. That's a love language. That's the real one.

We stood on the platform at Astoria and she said we should do garba together since I'm missing Navratri, and I almost cried right there by the MetroCard machine. She didn't know how much I needed that. She just offered it.

Making friends in New York as an adult means you learn to recognize the moment it happens. It isn't loud. It's someone staying on the 6 train past their stop. It's someone remembering a thing you said offhand about home.

I walked up the stairs in Astoria feeling lighter than I have in months. The city felt smaller, in the good way. In the way that means you're no longer facing it alone.

Sometimes a friend is just the person who misses their stop for you.
