The Bodega Cat on Nostrand Remembers Me

Three years in, and a small grey cat has decided I belong here

Dispatch from Nostrand Avenue, Crown Heights

✦

The bodega cat on Nostrand Avenue has lived there longer than I've lived in New York, and for three years he has treated me with the exact contempt I deserve.

He's grey, enormous, missing part of one ear, and he sleeps on the stack of newspapers by the register like a king on a throne he inherited. I buy my morning coffee there before catching the 2 or 3, and every day I've said good morning to this cat and every day he has stared through me into the middle distance.

Until Wednesday.

Wednesday, the bodega cat on Nostrand Avenue lifted his head when I walked in. Looked at me. And — I need you to understand the gravity of this — he got up, walked over, and pressed his entire body against my shin.

I nearly cried over a bacon-egg-and-cheese. Jose behind the counter laughed and said, he likes you now, took him long enough. Three years. The same amount of time I've been here.

There's a scene in every Bollywood movie where the hero finally gets accepted by the hard-to-win elder — the glance, the nod, the quiet approval. That was me and this cat. I was Shah Rukh and he was the disapproving father who finally came around in the last reel.

Belonging to New York doesn't happen in big moments. Nobody hands you a certificate. It happens like this — the bodega cat on Nostrand Avenue deciding you're furniture now, part of the morning, allowed.

It happens when the halal cart guy starts your order before you ask. When you know which car of the 2 train opens right at your stairs. When the city stops treating you like a tourist and starts treating you like weather — just always there.

I gave the cat a little scratch behind his good ear. He accepted it for approximately four seconds, then returned to his newspapers, dignity restored.

But it happened. I was there. Jose witnessed it.

The bodega cat on Nostrand Avenue remembers me now. I have been in New York for three years and I have finally arrived.

Small city, big cat, enormous victory.
