Ahmedabad → New York
Life in NYC

The 6 Train, a Sudden Storm, and a Stranger's Umbrella

How a rainy Tuesday commute reminded me that New York is softer than it pretends to be

Dispatch from 51st Street & Lexington Avenue, Midtown

✦

It started raining the exact second I climbed the stairs out of the 6 train at 51st Street. Not a polite drizzle. A full Bollywood monsoon, the kind where the sky just gives up all at once.

I had no umbrella. Of course I had no umbrella. I am the girl who checks the weather app every morning and then ignores it completely.

So there I was, half under a scaffolding on Lexington, clutching my tote bag over my head like it would do anything. My mascara was already planning its escape down my cheeks.

And then this woman, maybe sixty, in a magnificent mustard raincoat, just stepped under the scaffolding next to me and tilted her umbrella my way. Didn't ask. Didn't make it a thing. Just said, "Which way are you walking?"

The 6 train rush hour gets a bad reputation. Everyone talks about the shoving, the pole-lickers, the man eating an entire plate of rice at 8am. And honestly, all of that is real. I have seen things on the 6 train I cannot unsee.

But nobody tells you about the quieter stuff. The 6 train rush hour is also where I've seen people give up seats without being asked, where a teenager once helped a woman carry a stroller up three flights without headphones even coming out.

We walked four blocks together, mustard-coat lady and me, sharing her umbrella and talking about nothing. She was headed to a doctor's appointment. I was headed to the studio. At the corner of 55th she pointed me left and kept going straight.

I never got her name. In Ahmedabad my mummy would have invited her home for chai by now, found out her entire family tree, and discovered they were somehow related. New York doesn't work like that. Here the kindness is quick and anonymous and then it's gone.

But it counts. It still counts.

I got to the studio soaked from the knees down, hair a disaster, and weirdly happy. Sometimes the city hands you a tiny grace and then disappears into the crowd before you can say thank you.

Carry an umbrella. Or don't, and let the city surprise you.
