Sunday Mornings at the DUMBO Flea Before It's Crowded

Coffee, cobblestones, and the bridge framed just so

Dispatch from DUMBO, Brooklyn

✦

There's a trick to DUMBO and the trick is being early.

By noon it's a theme park. Everyone with a camera, everyone trying to get the shot of the Manhattan Bridge framed perfectly between the brick buildings on Washington Street. I get it. It is a beautiful shot. I've taken it myself, badly, about forty times.

But Sunday mornings at the DUMBO flea before it's crowded belong to a quieter city. I take the A to High Street and walk down the cobblestones while the vendors are still setting up, coffee cups balanced on folding tables, tarps not yet unrolled. The light does this thing off the East River that makes everything look slightly nostalgic for itself.

I'm not there to buy, usually. Though I did find brass earrings last month that I wear constantly. I'm there for the ritual of it. A cortado from the little cart, the smell of cold river air, flowers somebody's selling cheap before they wilt. I buy a bunch for my apartment every time. It feels like taking care of myself, which I'm bad at in bigger ways but can manage in bunches of five-dollar carnations.

Sunday mornings at the DUMBO flea before it's crowded remind me of the markets back home in Ahmedabad — the law garden night market, vendors calling out, the beautiful chaos of it. This is cleaner, quieter, more curated. But there's a shared language in markets everywhere. The haggle. The browse. The specific joy of touching things you don't need.

This week I sat on a bench facing the bridge for almost an hour and just watched. A dad teaching his kid to ride a bike on the cobblestones, which seemed like a terrible place to learn but okay. A couple having a fight very politely. A man photographing his dog in front of the water with real artistic seriousness.

This is the city I fell for. Not the loud one. The one you catch early, before it's awake enough to perform.

Get there before noon and the whole river is yours.
