A Sunday Alone at Fort Tryon Park, Uptown on the 1

How far uptown you have to ride to remember that solitude and loneliness aren't the same thing.

Dispatch from Fort Tryon Park, Washington Heights

Nobody tells you the 1 train goes that far up. I rode it to 190th Street on Sunday, past every stop I usually get off at, up into a part of Manhattan that feels like a rumor.

Fort Tryon Park sits at the top of the island like a secret the rest of the city is too busy to keep. There are gardens up there. Actual gardens, with heather and hills and views of the Hudson so wide you forget you're on the same island as Times Square.

I went alone on purpose. There's a difference between being alone because nobody wanted you and being alone because you chose the whole afternoon for yourself. I'm still learning which one I am on any given day.

I bought a coffee, sat on a stone wall, and watched an old couple share a sandwich in total silence. Comfortable silence. The kind you earn after forty years.

Back home in Ahmedabad, being alone was almost impossible — someone was always in the room, the house full of aunts and cousins and the TV playing an old Amitabh film nobody was watching. I complained about it constantly. Now I ride an hour uptown just to find a version of quiet I once had for free.

Fort Tryon Park doesn't ask anything of you. It just lets you sit. A woman practiced tai chi near the promenade. A dog gave up entirely and lay flat in the shade. The Hudson kept doing its slow silver thing.

I stayed until the light went gold and then longer, until it went that bruised blue that means the day is closing. Then I got back on the 1, all the way down, back into the noise I chose.

Some Sundays you have to leave the city to fall back in love with it.

Love,

Pooja
