Life Lately: Four Trains to a Dream

The 4:30 hour commute that rearranged my whole life.

Dispatch from Midtown

My life has never been as chaotic as it is now since I moved to New York to work in the fashion industry. While I have only portrayed the glamorous side of the city and fashion, I have not had the opportunity to share the journey that led me here.

It was August 25, 2024, when I received an offer to work as an intern (Assistant designer) with one of the biggest Indian designers in New York. Without hesitation, I decided to move to New York and work with him. The next day, I packed my bags and left Pittsburgh, driving 7 hours to my grandparents' house in Jersey to figure out the rest.

On August 27, 2024, I had my very first day in the city. I woke up at 5 am and took 4 different trains, totaling 4 hours and 30 minutes, to reach New York City. Despite my efforts, I was still late on my first day of work and couldn't help but question, Am I crazy for going through so much just for a dream?

For the first time, I am working on building my identity. It doesn't have to be picture-perfect, and we don't have to have everything together before making a big decision. However, you have to enjoy the journey before reaching your final destination and deep down, I knew it would all be worth it.

Today, I am sharing a piece of my story as I pack my bags and prepare to officially move to New York City in a week. I am filled with excitement to see what the city has in store for me. Also, I hope that living there will help me become more punctual.

Love,

Pooja
