A Perfect Sunday in Fort Tryon Park, Way Up North

The A train, a paperback, and the New York nobody puts on postcards

Dispatch from Fort Tryon Park, Washington Heights

Everyone acts like Central Park is the only park in Manhattan and I need you to know they are wrong and Fort Tryon Park is up there proving it.

Sunday I got on the A train and just went up. Way up. Past where the tourists get off, past Harlem, all the way to 190th Street in Washington Heights. The A when it goes express up there feels like it's tunneling to another city entirely.

Fort Tryon Park is at the very top of the island and it does not care about being famous. It has these winding stone paths and the heather garden and benches perched over the Hudson where you can see all the way to the Palisades on the Jersey side, all green cliffs, no billboards.

I brought a paperback I've been pretending to read for a month. I brought a mango from the fruit cart. I found a bench in the shade and I did, genuinely, nothing.

A nani in a sari was doing slow laps with what I assume were her grandchildren. Two teenagers were filming a dance they kept messing up and laughing about. A man was reading a newspaper in Spanish, unhurried. Late August up here has this softness, the heat finally loosening its grip, the light going gold earlier.

The thing about Fort Tryon Park is that it gives you the one thing Manhattan swears it doesn't have: quiet. Real quiet. The kind where you can hear leaves instead of horns.

I thought about how I almost didn't come. How the A train felt like a whole journey and I nearly stayed in bed doomscrolling instead. And how the best days here are almost always the ones you have to ride forty minutes uptown to earn.

I stayed until the light started slanting. Ate my mango over the trash can like a raccoon in linen. Read maybe eleven pages.

The city is loudest when you're standing still in the middle of it. Sometimes you have to go to the edge to hear yourself.

Take the A train all the way up sometime. Bring a mango.

Love,

Pooja
